+ - Microsoft Brings Cold War Tech to Compact Discs->

Anonymous Crobar writes: Microsoft Corporation has been assigned a patent for a new type of optical media verification that individually fingerprints each disc. The patented method involves spraying certain regions of an optical disc (think CD/DVD) with epoxy droplets. The pattern that results is unique to each disc and is encoded into the payload of each disc. When a drive looks to verify an optical medium, it compares the encoded representation against the measured spray pattern. For reasons discussed on the blog, this technology is not likely to show up on the desktop.
