Submission + - Are Usability Studies Hurting the Free Desktop? (earthweb.com)

inkscapee writes: "Are the developers of free desktops obsessed with design principles at the expense of what users actually want?" Yes, they are. Because understanding good design takes a lot more education than scanning Sun's ancient design study and cherry-picking the bits that sound good. As usual, listening to actual users is at the bottom of the list. "Just as a paragraph can be grammatically correct while its meaning is nonsensical or wrong, so a computer interface can be based on the collected works of Edward Tufte and still contain structures that are awkward and inconvenient."
